Illuminated Manuscript: Saint Michael Battling a Demon from a 15th Century Book of Hours
Illuminated Manuscript Leaf with striking miniature of St. Michael.
Leaf features Michael, the archangel, from a 15th century Book of Hours painted on vellum. Saint Michael carries a blue shield and a sword over his head amidst his battle with the devils. His red cape rising behind him suggests movement as Michael prepares to strike the demon at his feet. Behind Michael, in the background, is an impressive walled city.
The 3/4 border surrounding the miniature teems with red, pink, yellow, blue, green, purple & gold plants, flowers, strawberries, leaves and acanthus leaves. A yellow bird appears on the bottom of the border and drollery on the left border. A large 4-line initial "M" beginning "Michael" opens the 4 lines of text painted in red and gold. Text written in brown-black ink in gothic script. Verso contains a lovely border of blue & red flowers, green leaves, and gold & blue acanthus leaves. 7 lines of text in Latin written in a gothic text with black ink. Minor discoloration to lower margin of border.
