Lovely leaf from a Bible written in Paris in the 13th century (c.1240).
The leaf was probably from a portable Bible and likely traveled with a friar. 50 lines of text in each of 2 columns written in a dark brown ink on vellum. Recto includes large 4-line and 2 line illustrated letters in blue and red with nice marginal penwork extending from the letters. Verso includes a striking 4-line illustrated letter "U" in blue and red with penwork extending from the letter. The text is from the end of 1st Ezra 9-10 opening of the Book of Nehemiah. A truly beautiful leaf!
