Lovely miniature, with vibrant blue border, depicting the Raising of Lazarus.
Miniature of the Raising of Lazarus. In the bottom right corner is Lazarus, who has been dead for four days, when Christ calls him back to life in answer to the pleas of Lazarus' two sisters, Mary and Martha. The sisters are behind Christ, who is gesturing for Lazarus to emerge from his tomb. Surrounding the image is a bright border in blue with yellow flowers and buds as well as a skull in the center of the bottom margin. Miniature measures 99 mm x 66 mm (approx. 3.9 x 2.6 inches).
One 4-line illuminated initial (the letter "D") in burnished gold and blue. The text, written in gold-brown Latin gothic script on vellum, is from Psalm 114. Verso not examined (leaf not taken out of frame).
France: c. 1520. Size (with frame): 245 mm x 210 mm (approx. 9.6 x 8.3 inches). In gilt wooden frame and silk matting. A fine leaf.
