RARE PHOTOGRAPH, INSCRIBED BY EINSTEIN TO THE PRESIDENT OF HEBREW UNIVERSITY, DR. SELIG BRODETSKY: “To Dr Selig Brodetsky / A. Einstein. 50”.
This rare press photograph was taken on January 31, 1950, at Einstein’s Princeton home to mark Einstein’s election as President of the joint board of the American Friends of the Hebrew University and the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science. With Einstein are officers and directors of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the Weizmann Institute of Science and their American Affiliates.
Einstein had a very close relationship with Hebrew University. In fact, it was only a few months after this photo was taken - on March 18, 1950 - that he drew up his will, making Hebrew University of Jerusalem the recipient of his written archives.
-Dr. Selig Brodetsky, the President of Hebrew University and Chairman of its Executive Council (standing behind Einstein above Einstein’s right shoulder), the recipient of this photo;
-Harry Levine and Dewey D. Stone, both charter members of the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science;
-Samuel Hausman, general chairman of the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York;
-Philip G. Whitman, President of the American Friends of the Hebrew University;
-Meyer Weisgal, President of the Weizmann Institute of Science;
-Abe Feinberg, important Jewish American leader and lobbyist;
-Hugh Salpeter, influential American Jewish leader.
