Illuminated Manuscript Leaf with Miniature of The Annunciation

”Hail Mary, full of grace: Our Lord is with thee…”

EXQUISITE LEAF WITH MINIATURE OF THE ANNUNCIATION, SURROUNDED BY STUNNING AND HIGHLY DECORATED GOLD BORDER. FROM A FRENCH BOOK OF HOURS, C.1480.

The recto of the leaf features a large detailed image of a kneeling Mary in a beautiful blue robe with gold highlights. Her face and hands are rendered with a particularly high level of artistry. Next to her is the Archangel Gabriel, with prominent white and blue wings. The depiction of the chamber is extraordinary, with drapery, tiles, window, and posts all painted with exceptionally fine detail.

Surrounding the miniature is a thick gold border suffused with flowers and berries dominated by blues, reds, greens, and purples and two large birds including a magnificent peacock in the bottom border.

France: c1480. Leaf size: approx. 5.0 x 7.0 inches; 127x180mm (with blank border); 4.5x6.25 in; 117x157mm (painted border); 2.5x3.5 in; 64x92mm (miniature). In outstanding condition with only a few spots of flaking, mostly on left side of miniature.

The text is from Officium Beatae Mariae (The Office of Our Blessed Lady), a prayer said at matins (morning). It includes most of Psalm 94.

Beginning on the recto beneath the miniature (introduced by a large three-line initial) and continuing on the verso, the text reads:

Domine labia mea aperies. Et os meum annunciabit laudem tuam.  Deus in adiutorium meum intende. Domine ad adiuvandum me festina. Gloria Patri, et Filio: et Spiritui sancto. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper: et in saecula saeculorum, Amen. Alleluia. Ave Maria, gratia plena: Dominus tecum.

Venite exultemus Domino, iubilemus Deo salutari nostro…

English Translation (courtesy of medievalist (dot) net):

Thou O Lord wilt open my lips. And my mouth shall declare thy praise. Incline unto my aid O God. O Lord make haste to help me. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost.  Even as it was in the beginning, and now, and ever: and world without end, Amen. Alleluia.

Hail Mary, full of grace: Our Lord is with thee.

Come let us rejoice unto our Lord, let us make joy to God our saviour….
