Harlem As Seen By Hirschfeld

FIRST EDITION, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY HIRSCHFELD on half-title, with 24 beautiful mounted lithographs.

Many of the Hirschfeld's images in Harlem have become iconic representations of the African-American experience in the 1930's and are often considered to be the artist's best work. Inscribed, "To Berge Avadanian / Hirschfeld". Berge Avadanian (1918-2005) was a noted American World War II hero who, among other things, played a significant role in the D-Day invasion.

Text by William Saroyan. New York: Hyperion, 1941. Folio, original pictorial cloth. Boards bowed (as usual), soiling to binding, cloth fraying in a few places on spine. Plates very clean and bright with only occasional spots of foxing and some paste action. One of only 1000 copies printed. An unusually well-preserved inscribed copy of a work that is extremely difficult to find in collectible condition.
